The Value of the Lone Star Degree

On the night of July 16, at the fourth general session of the 86th Annual Texas FFA Convention, more than 2,000 members were awarded their Lone Star Degree. As a member of the Texas FFA, the Lone Star is the highest degree that a member can receive at the state level.
The Lone Star Degree is awarded out of gratitude towards the recipient’s hard work and dedication throughout their three years in an agriculture course.
This award is given out to the students who have actively participated in an agriculture course for a minimum of three years during their high school career. The recipients must have completed at least 300 hours, or invested at least $1,000, in a Supervised Agriculture Experience of their choice.
The members of the Texas FFA are encouraged to reach this level of excellency by, not only friends, family and ag teachers, but by fellow Lone Star recipients as well.
Tom Maynard, Executive Director of the Texas FFA Association, is one of such past beneficiaries of the Lone Star Degree. He was one of many FFA members to have walked across the stage at the Texas FFA State Convention, approximately 30 years ago in Fort Worth.
“It was an honor getting to walk across that stage after spending so much time and effort to get there. It brought a sense of pride and satisfaction to myself and I hope every member gets to experience such pride and satisfaction when they too get to experience this great moment,” says Mr. Maynard.
