Texas FFA chapters collected more than $70,000 worth of home items intended for the homeless community of Fort Worth, the host city of the 90th Annual Texas FFA Convention.
“We started the Welcome Home Basket program to benefit the homeless community in our city,” said Mayor of Fort Worth Betsy Price. “We have an issue, like all major cities, with homelessness and we’re focused on that now.”
Members were asked to bring essential home items to help people with the transition. Items like towels, kitchenware and silverware were donated. The items are placed in baskets and then given to the homeless.
“As of now [the third session], you have donated 352 baskets,” said Price.
All the baskets donated will be taken to Fort Worth's Directions Home Committee.
“I believe projects like this help shape our members in so many ways,” Hailey Pitts, Lovelady FFA. “Service projects mold our members into kind and compassionate leaders by allowing them to serve others and build up communities around them.”
