Stephenville FFA Member Conducts Study on Agricultural Literacy

Stephenville FFA member, Tucker Hubbard, is analyzing agricultural literacy and how it can impact consumers and producers.

“I strived to understand the current level of agricultural literacy of the public,” said Hubbard. “I was able to analyze various demographics to determine their literacy level. Understanding consumer perception can help agriculturists better market products and advocate for the industry.”

To begin with, he conducted a literature review, which he used to develop objectives for his research.

“I then drafted a Google Forms survey and sent it to a panel of experts, along with my research objectives, to determine validity and ensure my objectives were being met,” said Hubbard.

The high school members also learned that at least 30 responses to a survey are needed to achieve an adequate standard deviation within the data points.

“I was able to get over 200 survey responses,” said Hubbard. “It was not only exciting that people took my survey, but it increased reliability.”

He says that he realized after talking with his FFA advisor that participating in agriscience was, in fact, not like another FFA contest. It is real-life research.

“I initially thought research projects were just Googling information and writing a paper,” said Hubbard. “I now know that I am writing a paper, but it is my work and findings that I am writing about and not something that I find on the internet.”

Hubbard’s successful SAE project was recognized at the 2023 Texas FFA State Convention as the Star Greenhand in Agriscience.
