“Living to Serve” with a creative twist, the Rusk FFA chapter hosted the First Annual Texas FFA Convention T-Shirt Design Contest and Sale in conjunction with the Texas FFA Convention.
One hundred percent of proceeds made from the Rusk FFA service project are intended to go towards Texas FFA and Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas scholarships. The effort has accumulated more than $17,250.
“The idea was cultivated out of the desire to give back to the community,” said Madison Dunn, Rusk FFA Advisor.
The chapter's presale efforts sold more than 1,200 shirts. In addition, while at convention, chapter members staffed an exhibit booth to sell the winning design.
The purpose behind the service project was not only to support members with scholarships, but also, give members an outlet to express their creative abilities.
The design winner from Hale Center FFA, Emily Wyatt, was awarded a $1,000 dollar scholarship. Chapter member Laurel Benson is proud to have her small chapter featured due to the artistic talent of a peer.
“[This contest] feels like a creative way to include all chapters in a collaborative effort highlighting students with a unique skill set,” Hale Center advisor Austin Barrow said.
Rusk FFA member Karen Dyess hopes that in the future this now annual effort will allow others to showcase their skills and create new opportunities in the FFA.
In addition to the service drive profits benefiting ag education, the shirt screen-printer, Dunkerley Design, donated proceeds back to the Texas FFA Foundation in the form of two $1,000 proficiency award scholarships.
