Texas FFA students were able to gain contest experience while exploring college degree opportunities at Prairie View A&M University’s Leadership Career Development Event Invitational in October.
“[We began hosting competitions] to increase the awareness and visibility of the agriculture programs amongst high school students and agriculture education teachers, thus increasing students enrollment in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences at PVAMU,” said Prairie View A&M University USDA/1890 Program Liaison and event coordinator, Horace Hodge.
Leadership Development Events focus on creating situations for members to demonstrate their abilities in public speaking, decision making, communication and their knowledge of agriculture and the FFA organization. Numerous invitational competitions are held across the state throughout the year in addition to district, area and state contests.
Prairie View A&M’s competition consisted of Chapter Conducting, Radio Broadcasting, Ag Advocacy, Public Relations, Ag Issues, Creed Speaking, and Quiz.
Weimar FFA had the strongest showing at the event, taking first place in Public Relations, Radio Broadcasting, Junior Chapter Conducting, and Senior Chapter Conducting.
The university is already planning its next FFA event. Hodge said a CDE competition is scheduled for February 25, 2016. The university wants to continue playing a part in the growth and awareness of agricultural education.
“[We want] to continue to assist in developing capable humans trained in agricultural sciences,” Hodge said.
