Members Cause a Buzz in the Quiz Bowl

The Quiz Bowl competition welcomes students to showcase and challenge their knowledge acquired from agricultural education in a heightened competitive environment.

In 2016, Ray Pieniazek, Texas FFA Board of Directors member, proposed to hold an annual quiz bowl contest after noting a loss of curriculum contests opportunities. The first contest was held at the 2017 Texas FFA State Convention in Fort Worth.

Students are to understand the objectives presented in the Principles of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources curriculum to progress within the competition.

“It stimulates their appetite to learn more about the whole agricultural industry,” Pieniazek said.

As a result of participation in this contest, members develop vital personal and interpersonal skills, including teamwork, confidence, decision-making, reasoning, and self-discipline.

“Teamwork is really big, especially in the lightning rounds, we can work together really quickly with our broad spectrum of knowledge and answer the questions,” said Nolan Douglas, La Vernia FFA.

The competition has grown to reach record numbers compared to past conventions. With 23 junior and 43 senior teams, the Quiz Bowl contest is gaining recognition as a state event.

At the 6th Annual Quiz Bowl, La Vernia FFA won the Senior Ag Quiz Bowl and Franklin FFA won the Junior AFNR Quiz Bowl.

“I’m super proud of these kids,” said Brandi Liere, Franklin FFA Advisor. “They tried something new, and I think this built a lot of confidence in them and taught them to step out of their comfort zone.”
