Cody Johnson and his rockin’ band kicked off the first night of the 87th Texas FFA Convention. Johnson’s unique blend of rock and country music serenaded FFA members at the annual concert Tuesday, July 14, 2015.
For ninety minutes the Texas Country crooner performed a set that included his hit songs, country favorites, and even a song from his brand new album that is set to release this spring. Johnson’s toe-tapping beats and swoon-worthy slow songs had everyone on their feet and set the tone for this year’s state convention.
The former Groveton FFA member eagerly awaited his opportunity to step onto the convention stage, just as he had earlier in his career, when he competed in the state talent contest. When asked if coming back to perform as a professional musician, he admitted he was nervous because it meant so much to him to perform for Texas FFA members.
“I am pretty nervous about tonight, just because it does mean a lot more than any other show,” said Johnson. “I don’t think I would be this nervous playing the Grand Ol’ Opry.”
He finds it amazing that teens look up to him and appreciates being a product of the Texas FFA. Johnson began his FFA experience when his agriscience teacher, Larry Fortenberry, pushed him to participate in the state talent competition. He then went on to be crowned runner-up. He also competed in bull riding, various Career and Leadership Development Events, and served as his chapter’s vice president.
Even with such a diverse FFA experience Johnson said, “Music always came back to the front no matter what I tried to do.”
