Area Officers Attend Summer State Leadership Conference

Ninety-eight Texas FFA Area Officers attended the 2019 Texas FFA State Leadership Conference [SLC] in hopes to develop leadership skills and receive facilitation training.

The event was held June 1-4 in San Angelo, Texas.

For decades, the State Leadership Conference (SLC) was held in more of a “camp” environment. In 2016 the expected content delivery changed to a more professional environment. With the concept still in infancy, the 2016-2017 Texas FFA Officer team faced the challenge of designing an event held in a conference setting. With guiding principles in mind, this year’s officers set out to develop a comprehensive and targeted curriculum. Ultimately, the professional environment is intended to help students feel empowered to work on committees and feel like their voices are heard.

“SLC was a once in a lifetime experience,” said Kade Miller, Panhandle FFA member.  “The opportunity to grow our leadership skills and become intentional, selfless leaders that can now go back to our areas and impact members across the state makes me that much more grateful to be a part of this organization.”

The conference featured a dynamic lineup of speakers including Texas FFA Executive Director Austin Large, Texas FFA Foundation Executive Director Aaron Alejandro, National FFA Officer Shea Booster, Texas Beef Counsel Industry Outreach Coordinator Victoria Heller, and Past Texas FFA and National FFA Officer Riley Branch.

The four-day schedule was packed with skills-based workshops, expert panels, and comprehensive instruction demonstrating the latest tools available for leadership development.

“SLC was nothing short of a life changing and fun experience,” said Blake Mills, Center Point FFA member. “Learning and working alongside some of the most talented and unique individuals who share the same passion for FFA, agriculture an education was amazing.”

Attendees were given tools to reproduce the training received, with the end goal for SLC attendees being to facilitate the content at the area, district and chapter levels.
