Presley Merritt, a Anna FFA member, was named the top Small Animal Production and Care proficiency in the nation at the 97th Annual National FFA Convention and Expo.
The high school student runs an operation that breeds and competitively shows velveteen lop rabbits.
“I am the proud owner of Back A Bit Rabbitry,” said Merritt. “I have sold rabbits all across the country and many have gone on to win buckles, banners, and ribbons for other FFA members.”

Merritt currently owns 13 breeding rabbits. She selectively breeds the best rabbits by looking for any complimentary traits they may have.
“A lot goes into owning a rabbitry,” said Merritt. She handles the breeding, birthing, care, and marketing of her rabbits, and she conducts rabbit care workshops to mentor local youth. Through this she is putting the knowledge she gained in the agricultural classroom into real-world practice.

Last year, she became the only youth board member of the Velveteen Lop Breeders of Texas Club.
“This role not only allows me to represent my breed, but also showcase my knowledge and accomplishments while breeding Velveteen Lops,” said Merritt.
