National Convention

The National FFA Convention is held each October with nearly 55,000 FFA members and guests from across the country in attendance. Members participate in general sessions, competitive events, educational tours, leadership workshops, a career show and expo, volunteer activities and much more. It is one of the largest annual student conventions in the country.

Texas will be represented by 60 voting delegates at the 85th National FFA Convention. In mid August, each Texas delegate will receive a letter explaining the delegate process and requirements in detail.

The delegate process incorporates local and state level issues into a committee process. The representatives who attended the State President's Conference have determined the six delegate issues which will be considered during the 85th National FFA Convention. Descriptions of these committees as well as the delegate committee assignments can be found below in the documents bar.  You will be receiving further information from delegate committee chairs and delegate committee coordinators as National Convention approaches.

Delegate Schedule

All Texas delegates will meet on Monday, October 22nd at 9:00 p.m. in the convention center  for our Texas Delegation opening meeting and pizza party. A skywalk on the second floor of the Westin connects the hotel to the convention center. Please use that skywalk to enter the convention center. Take the escalator to the first floor of the convention center and our room will be down the hall. A sign or state officer will be outside the door to help you locate the room. Your week will be a full one, so please get plenty of rest before arriving to ensure you are prepared for the week ahead.

Dress

Because we will be working and living downtown for a week, you will be interacting with people that are unfamiliar with our organization. You should be prepared to represent the Texas FFA well during your week as a delegate. Look professional at all times, this includes your grooming (haircut, shave, etc). Dress for the occasion. Bring plenty of official dress (clean white shirts, pressed black slacks and skirts, shined shoes, black socks or plenty of black hose). There are a number of activities that call for casual dress.  Khaki slacks and a nice collared shirt please.  If you want to wear nice pressed Wranglers for the Wrangler night, that is great, but you do not need to purchase something special for this event.  However, do not wear (or bring) torn-up jeans with rips, tears, etc. It may be popular, but is completely inappropriate for this occasion. Collared shirts and closed-toed shoes are expected.  If you bring boots, no work boots please. The weather during the week typically includes lows in the 30's and highs in the mid-50's. We recommend you pack an overcoat if you have one and an umbrella that fits in your suitcase.

Travel

Air:
Remember to pack in luggage suitable for air travel. Leave pocket knives, etc. at home as they will not pass airport carry-on screening. They will also be checking pockets and purses in Conseco Field House where the sessions will be held, so once you arrive you will still have to be cautious of what you have with you. This can be difficult, but please try not to create a distraction at the airport or during convention. We want an uneventful trip to Indianapolis. You must BRING A PHOTO ID to the airport! Also keep in mind that all liquids over 3 ounces must be placed in a piece of checked baggage and not in carryon baggage. For more information on what you can and cannot bring into the airport, visit the Transportation Security Administration website.

Shuttle:
There will not be a representative of the Texas FFA Association at the airport to shuttle each of you to the Westin. We recommend that you try to get a group together and use a shuttle/limo service at the airport to get to the Westin, as cab fare from the airport for individuals can be more expensive than a shared limo ride. The ground transportation station directly across the street from the baggage claim area in the airport has several limo and shuttle services. Please visit http://www.indianapolisairport.com/parking_transportation click on “Ground Transportation” for a list of the services at the airport. We recommend calling ahead for rates and to reserve a shuttle. Remember that you will need cash to pay for the transfer/shuttle from the airport to the Westin and back again on Sunday. The officers often use Carey Limo (it is usually cheaper than a taxi). They can be reached at 800.888.INDY(4639).

Meals

There will be three meals provided early in the week at no charge, but the rest of your meals will be your responsibility while you are in Indianapolis. Please bring plenty of cash or a credit card to cover additional meals. You will be receiving a $200 check from the Texas FFA Foundation to help cover expenses. It will be mailed to same address used for letters mailed. Please notify the FFA Office if you want it mailed to a different address.

Delegate Preparation

It is crucial that delegates have educated themselves on the constitutional amendments and issues that will come before them before they arrive to convention. Delegates will be receiving emails prior to convention from the State Officers and our National Convention Committee Chairs. Delegates need to be aware that when serving as a National Delegate, your job is to represent the interests of the more than 86,000 members of the Texas FFA Association. You are their voice at the national level - and you must put your own interests aside to make decisions that protect them. Important information regarding the National Convention will be added to this web page periodically. Many of the documents specific to Texas are on this page; however, if delegates want to find more information about the National Convention such as keynote speakers, session addresses, and general convention schedules, or more detailed delegate information, these links are available:
